Operation Mahadev
Operation Mahadev was launched in order to eliminate the attackers of the Pahalgam terror attack. This operation took place on 28 July 2025 at the Lidwas forest area near Harwan.
The Pahalgam attack occurred on April 22, 2025 in J&K. 26 Civilians were killed which included 25 tourists and 1 local. while 20 others were injured. The victims were asked their religion and attackers targeted Hindu and Christian tourists.
The weapon used – AK-47 and M4 carbines
While this attackers made attacked and disappeared in the forest later India made a counter attack by launching operation Sindoor with a message “India will not tolerate cross-border terrorism”.

A) The Pahalgam attack –
Date : 22 April 2025
Place : Baisaran Valley
Weapons used : AK-47 and M4 carbines
Casualties :
This attack is considered as India’s dedliest civilian massacre since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
B) Operation Sindoor –
It was in response to the Pahalgam attack with a objective to dismantle terrorist infrastructure linked to Lashkar-e-taiba, jaish-e-mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen in Pakistan.
Date : 7-10 May 2025
Strikes : 24 missiles along with air strikes on 9 terrorist training camps
Forces Involved : Indian Army , Air Force , Navy and Intelligent agencies.
Weapon and Tactics : SCALP Cruise Missiles , Hammer Bombs , Kamikaze Drones
Diplomatic Impact of the attack exposed Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism. Also Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan was suspended which basically cut off a vital water lifeline. While on the Global level , countries like US , France , UAE and Israel supported India’s right to self-defence.
C) Operation Mahadev –
Although India launched operation Sindoor in response to the terror attack. But people were constantly demanding the arrest of the three terrorists who attacked on the tourists. The operation Mahadev is named after Mahadev Peak , the highest peak in the Zabarwan range , where terrorists were hiding.
The Indian Army , CRPF and J&K Police forces successfully performed operation Mahadev supported by Drone Surveillance and Technical Intelligence. All the three terrorists were killed namely Suleiman Shah (who was mastermind of Pahalgam attack) , Jibran (he was linked to 2024 Sonamarg Tunnel attack) and Hamza Afghani (Pakistani National and LeT operative).
These forces made a surveillance of 14 days , tracked their encrypted communication and satellite phone signals and then made the attack. These terrorists were hiding in the Zabarwan range. when the attack was done many weapons recovered namely m4 carbine , AK-47 rifles along with Pakistani voter IDs and Chinese communication devices.
