Hormuz in Turmoil : China’s Bold Masterstroke 2026

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets.
Any disruption in this narrow passage can significantly impact global energy supply and drive sharp increases in oil prices.

China is developing the Gwadar port and has given such a large amount of loans to Pakistan that, to repay them, Pakistan has had to take on more loans. To pay even the interest on those loans, Pakistan is again forced to borrow.

Then China said that if Pakistan builds the Gwadar port, it doesn’t have cement of the required quality—so China will supply it. It said Pakistan doesn’t have high-quality steel—so China will provide that as well. It also said that Pakistani engineers are not capable, so they will send their own engineers. In this way, China provided the money and also took the contract for the project.

Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)

From there, China also built a road—the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This corridor passes through India’s Kashmir region, and this issue is often downplayed by the media. It gets suppressed so that people don’t start questioning why it was built and why there isn’t stronger opposition.

This area had already gone to Pakistan at a time when Maharaja Hari Singh had not yet signed the agreement. The day he signed, Pakistan could not advance further; in fact, it was pushed back. But before that signing, this region had already been taken.
China told Pakistan that along this road, they would set up factories all around. What would be set up? Factories. Industries would develop, and people would get plenty of employment.

Now, in this region of Pakistan, people are saying, “Separate us, give us independence.” They say, “We are Baloch.” Baloch people are reportedly killed by the Pakistani army. The army takes action against the Baloch population. Now what happened here is that someone influenced these Baloch groups that they should target not only Pakistanis but also Chinese nationals. As a result, some Baloch groups began attacking Chinese workers, saying they would not allow them to work there. Because of this, the Chinese ended up leaving the area.

What if the Hormuz Strait gets closed, what will it do?

China is quite strategic—it is laying a pipeline underwater. Now,  It will lay a pipeline through the sea route to Iran—an underwater pipeline running beneath the sea.

It will extend the pipeline into Iran. Now, whether the Hormuz Strait remains open or gets closed, it won’t face any problems in the future. From here, it will buy oil, transport it, and deliver it through its own network.

Building a pipeline requires a one-time investment, and China is not a poor country—it has enormous financial resources. In fact, China currently holds more funds than the World Bank.

The Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz has long been one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, historically controlled by Persian empires and later contested by powers such as Portugal, Britain, and Iran. Why Hormuz is important ? You can check out here The Hormuz

As of April 2026, it remains central to global energy security. Ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has severely disrupted traffic through the strait, triggering one of the largest oil supply shocks in modern history.

The disruption has significantly reduced the flow of oil and gas—resources that normally account for a substantial share of global energy trade—leading to sharp price increases, supply shortages, and widespread economic impact across international markets.

Current Situation (April 2026)

Conflict:
Since February 28, 2026, Iran has responded to US–Israeli strikes by restricting access to the Strait of Hormuz, targeting vessels, and deploying naval mines.

Dual Blockade:
A complex standoff has emerged, with Iran limiting transit through the strait while the United States Navy enforces a blockade on Iranian ports.
